‘Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror’

EXCLUSIVE: Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has acquired international sales rights to Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, a documentary chronicling the legacy of Richard O’Brien’s classic musical The Rocky Horror Show.

The film debuted at SXSW in March; Kaleidoscope will release it in the UK in Q4 this year.

Strange Journey is directed by O’Brien’s son Linus O’Brien, written by Avner Shiloah, and produced by Shiloah, Linus O’Brien, and Margot Station’s Adam Gibbs and Garret Price.

The film explores the groundbreaking and transgressive themes, iconic performances and epic songs of the 1973 musical, and its 1975 film adaptation. The Rocky Horror Show began as a London fringe theatre play; before becoming a cult film, popular at midnight screenings.

Rocky Horror cast members and major players to appear in the film include Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, Peter Hinwood, Jim Sharman, and Richard Hartley; while celebrity fans including Jack Black and Trixie Mattel also appear.

North American rights are handled by the filmmakers in partnership with WME.

Spencer Pollard, Kaleidoscope CEO, described the film as “more than a retrospective—it’s a celebration of defiance, community, and the enduring magic of cult cinema.”

“Rocky Horror is unique in the way it created communities and spaces for people to express themselves without judgment—to feel liberated in every way they choose and to find a home among others like them,” said Linus O’Brien. “This documentary is as much a celebration of them as it is of Rocky Horror itself.”
