‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ adds $153m in second session
Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie predictably took a tumble in its second session, falling 48% in North America and 43% in international holdover markets. But given its stellar opening numbers, the animation still achieved big box office for the second weekend of play.
The Universal release grossed an estimated $69.0m in North America, and $83.5m across international markets, topping the global weekend chart with $152.5m.
In cumulative, those numbers are $308.1m in North America, $320.6m for international and $628.8m worldwide. That makes Galaxy Movie the top-grossing release of 2026 from a US studio, and it will soon eclipse the only film this year with higher box office: Chinese hit Pegasus 3 ($641.1m).
Among international markets, Mexico led the weekend (with an estimated $11.3m), and also leads the international ranking in cumulative with $47.9m so far. That puts it ahead of the lifetime totals of numerous comparison titles including Zootopia 2 and the videogame adaptation that dominated the box office exactly a year ago, A Minecraft Movie.
However, Galaxy Movie still has a way to go to match 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie in Mexico: $85.4m lifetime total, according to available data.
In key European markets France, Germany and UK/Ireland, Galaxy Movie is either just below, or in line with, The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the same stage of release. So far, UK/Ireland leads Europe with $37.5m, ahead of Germany ($29.2m) and France ($23.9m).
Next in the international ranking are Spain ($16.9m so far), Australia ($16.0m) and China ($14.8m). Italy is a little behind, with $11.8m, despite – or perhaps because of – the stereotypical Italian-American flavour of the Japanese-created game’s original Brooklyn plumber characters Mario and Luigi. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Italy ranked only 10th among international markets for lifetime box office, just ahead of Netherlands.
Galaxy Movie opened in Poland at the weekend, grossing an estimated $2.6m including previews – the biggest debut for a US studio film so far this year.
Central America, which Universal treats as a single market for box office purposes, is a notable bright spot, with $10.7m so far – ahead of the lifetime totals of Zootopia 2 and Minions.
Among comparison titles globally, Galaxy Movie remains behind the pace of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which three years ago had reached $678m after two weekends of play. However, it’s ahead of Warner Bros’ live-action A Minecraft Movie, which last year stood at $551m after its second weekend.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie went on to achieve a lifetime total of $1.36bn worldwide. A Minecraft Movie maxed out at $960m.
Key markets yet to receive The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Japan and South Korea – releasing respectively on April 24 and April 29.
‘Project Hail Mary’ posts strong hold in international markets

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie taking the storyline away from the Mushroom Kingdom and into various galaxies, and Project Hail Mary taking Ryan Gosling’s reluctant astronaut to distant star Tau Ceti, there’s a notable space favour to the global box office currently.
Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary posted a strong fourth session, dropping just 22% in North America (where powerful new releases were thin on the ground) and 31% for international holdover markets. Worldwide tally after four weekends of play is $510.6m – the second-highest total for a US studio film so far this year, and the third-biggest among all films.
Among international markets, UK/Ireland leads with $36.0m so far (via Sony), just ahead of China with $33.2m. Australia ($19.2m), Germany ($16.1m) and South Korea ($15.3m) come next.
Two new markets opened at the weekend: Indonesia with an estimated $875,000, and Israel with $580,000.
Project Hail Mary is chasing the $630.6m grossed by Fox’s The Martian in 2015. Both films are adapted from science fiction novels by Andy Weir, and this comparison is not adjusted for inflation.
New ‘Detective Conan’ film launches with $26.0m
Ranking third at the worldwide weekend box office is Toho’s Detective Conan: Fallen Angel Of The Highway (aka Detective Conan: Highway No Datenshi) with an estimated $26.0m from a single market, Japan.
This is the 29th film in the Case Closed anime series, which have released on consecutive Aprils since 1997, taking a break only in pandemic-era 2020. There have also been a number of spinoff films.
A year ago, Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback opened with $28.8m in Japan, on its way to a $97m lifetime total in its home market, and $166m worldwide including $56.7m in China – according to available data.
Fallen Angel Of The Highway is directed by Takahiro Hasui, making his feature debut. Previous credits include an episode of TV series My Hero Academia. The Case Closed films are based on the manga series created by Gosho Aoyama.
‘You, Me & Tuscany’ starts with mild $9m
Universal romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany has made a fairly modest start at the worldwide box office, launching in North America with an estimated $8.0m, and adding a weak $1.1m across the first wave of 21 international markets.
The Will Packer production is directed by Kat Coiro (Marry Me) from an original screenplay by Ryan Engle and Kristin Engle, and stars Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page. Poster tagline for the American-finds-love-in-Tuscany tale: “She came for the pasta and got lost in the sauce.”
Among international markets, UK/Ireland leads with an estimated $413,000, ahead of Australia ($181,000) and Netherlands ($118,000). Many key markets are yet to release, including Brazil and Mexico in May, Italy in June, and Germany, Spain, France and South Korea all in August.
You, Me & Tuscany landed in sixth place at the worldwide weekend box office. In fourth is A24’s The Drama with an estimated $22.7m in its second session (and $62.2m so far), and in fifth is Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers ($354.4m so far).
Another new entry in the top 10 chart is South Korean horror Salmokji: Whispering Water, beginning with an estimated $4.9m in its home market only. Directed by Lee Sang-min and distributed by Showbox, it’s the story of a film crew sent to a remote reservoir to reshoot footage, and experiencing supernatural events. Kim Hye-yoon, Lee Jong-Won and Kim Jun-han lead the cast.
