‘Nuns Vs. The Vatican’

EXCLUSIVE: UK-based sales firm Together Films has acquired worldwide rights to Lorena Luciano’s documentary Nuns Vs. The Vatican.

The film has just been selected for an international premiere at Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival next month.

It follows a former nun who breaks her silence to expose Marko Rupnik, a celebrated Jesuit priest and alleged abuser. Together Films acquired the title from producer Filippo Piscopo of Film2Productions.

Nuns Vs. The Vatican had its world premiere in the TIFF Docs strand at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It won the Subject Matter award at DOC NYC last year, and the Human Rights Award at Hamptons Doc Fest.

The film will play at Thessaloniki on Sunday, March 8, which is also International Women’s Day. Gloria Branciani, a key figure in the film who broke decades of silence to bring allegations against Rupnik, will participate in a Q&A at the festival alongside Luciano.

The film is produced by Film2Productions in association with Mighty Entertainment and the Artemis Rising Foundation. Executive producers are Mariska Hargitay, Trish Adlesic, Lauran Bromley, Regina K. Scully and Amanda Stephens.

Nuns vs. the Vatican was born from the determination to break the silence and say what was known but never told,” said Luciano. “Our international premiere at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival is deeply meaningful to our film subjects and our entire team, because it shows we are not afraid. What was once silenced can now become noise, and ultimately become change.”

“This is a powerful and deeply resonant story of truth, accountability, and resilience in the face of institutional silence, and we believe it should be essential viewing for audiences on platforms worldwide,” said Sarah Mosses, Together Films founder and CEO.
