Ken Russell’s The Devils

Warner Bros Clockwork has announced the second title on its nascent slate and will distribute the 4K restoration of Ken Russell’s The Devils, which will screen in Cannes Classics.

The Cannes screening will mark the first publicly-released version of the film as intended by Russell. Warner Bros Clockwork is scheduling a global release in autumn and in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI) in the UK.

The film will open in select North American cinemas on October 16 in an exclusive one-week engagement. International theatrical release dates will be announced in due course.

Russell’s saga of obsession, corruption, politics and witchcraft in 17th-century France stars Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave and stands as arguably the British filmmaker’s defining work. Produced by Warner Bros in 1971, it went on to garner best director awards from Venice Film Festival and the National Board of Review.

The restored version is based on Russell’s sole director’s cut that was initially reconstructed in 2004 under the supervision of Russell and the film’s editor Michael Bradsell ,with the collaboration of critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode and Paul Joyce.

Warner Bros Clockwork’s first repertory title joins a slate that includes Sean Baker’s upcoming Ti Amo!, which was unveiled in CinemaCon last month.
