Fast rising Belgian actress Veerle Baetens [pictured] (headlining the cast in Felix van Groeningen’s Berlinale Panorama title The Broken Circle Breakdown) is to play the lead Jan Verheyen’s courtroom drama The Verdict (Het vonnis).

Also confirmed are Johan Leysen (The American, The Spiral) and Koen De Bouw (Loft, The Memory of a Killer). Shooting starts on Feb 11 in Antwerp and Bruges.

The Verdict is produced by Peter Bouckaert for Eyeworks Film & TV Drama. Jan Verheyen previously directed Dossier K., the follow up to Erik Van Looy’s The Memory of a Killer.

Baetens is in Berlin this week for the premiere of The Broken Circle Breakdown. In the film, she plays Elise, a young woman madly in love with 36-year-old Flemish cowboy Didier (Johan Heldenbergh). They begin an unlikely but happy relationship. Then everything changes after they lose their daughter.

Dirk Impens of Menuet is the producer of The Broken Circle Breakdown, with The Match Factory handling international sales. In advance of the Berlin premiere, the film was sold to Germany (Pandora).

Baetens can also be seen as Margaret Of Anjou in the new BBC drama series The White Queen, set during the War of the Roses.
