The Warner Bros-based company confirmed today [9] that Guillermo del Toro will direct and is preparing a September start on the fantasy creature feature.

Pacific Rim will open in summer 2013 and is being produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni for Legendary Pictures and del Toro.  

Del Toro committed to the project when his alien horror passion project At The Mountains Of Madness stalled. That project was set up at Universal and was put on hold after the studio became wary of the likely R rating and projected $150m price tag.

“We started developing Pac Rim a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons,” del Toro said.

“We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me.”
