Ray Winstone, Jim Sturgess and Lesley Manville head the cast of the CinemaNX backed project which is being co-financed by UK rock band Coldplay.

Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll director Mat Whitecross and writer Paul Viragh are joining forces for a second time on Ashes, a contemporary film noir which will feature an all-star British cast including Ray Winstone and Another Year BAFTA nominated actress Lesley Manville.

Tamara Drewe actor Luke Evans, Venus star Jodie Whittaker and rising Brit actor Jim Sturgess, who recently wrapped shooting on Lone Scherfig’s One Day, will also star in the film, which has been written by actor-turned-writer Viragh.

The project is being co-financed by Isle of Man production and financing company CinemaNX, private investor Merzbau and the UK band Coldplay, for whom Whitecross previously directed music videos.

His credits also include documentaries The Shock Doctrine and The Road To Guantanamo, which he co-directed with Michael Winterbottom.

Shooting will get underway on March 21 in and around the Isle Of Man. Esther Douglas and Fiona Neilson of Fiesta Productions are producing the project, with Marc Samuelson and Steve Christian of CinemaNX, Phillip Keir of Merzbau and Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion of Coldplay executive producing.

The project has also received development funding from Northern Film + Media, and the UKFC’s Vision and Media programme.
