Steel tops June debuts on $113.1m

Superman shot to the top of the North American charts on a record June launch thanks to an estimated $113.1m three-day haul that swelled to $125.1m since Thursday midnight screenings. Meanwhile another superhero tale, Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, will cross $400m any day now through Buena Vista.

A total of 331 IMAX screens delivered $13.3m in a new June record.

Sony’s ensemble comedy This Is The End arrived at number two on a decent $20.5m as the rest of the top ten shuffled.

Summit’s mystery Now You See Me is headed for $100m through Lionsgate and ranks number three on $80m in its third weekend, while Fast & Furious continued to excel for Universal.

It ranks fourth on $219.6m after four weekends and is now the biggest in the franchise at the North America, international and global box office.

Sony’s Will Smith-Jaden Smith pairing in After Earth continued to slide away and ranks ninth on a disappointing $54.2m after three weekends.

A24 released Sofia Coppola’s Un Certain Regard opened The Bling Ring on $210,000 in five venues for a sensational $42,000 per-screen average. Emma Watson is among the cast in the true-life tale of teens who burgle celebrity homes.

Sundance hit Twenty Feet From Stardom opened through RADiUS-TWC on $52,200 in three sites.

Next weekend’s wide releases are Buena Vista/Pixar’s Monsters University and Paramount’s zombie thriller World War Z starring Brad Pitt.
