Google TV is to launch in the UK in July following a deal with manufacturer Sony as competition in the IPTV sector continues to heat up.

The internet-connected set top box will be the first device available in the UK which runs Google’s Android system and will feature a range of applications such as Twitter and YouTube.

The NSZ-GS7 Internet Player, currently available on pre-order in the UK ahead of an international roll-out, also offers Google’s Chrome browser to allow viewers to browse the internet. A dual-sided remote control features a touch pad for cursor control and a full keyboard. Sony is also launching a £280 Google TV DVD player in October.

Sony’s European head of marketing Gildas Pelliet [pictured] said the deal extended the manufacturer’s existing relationship with Google which saw it distribute a range of Android mobile and tablet devices.

“Entertainment content is available through so many channels and sites, and Google TV helps consumers easily find what they want to watch, listen or play with the freedom of the internet and using the familiar Chrome browser,” he said.

Google’s move into the internet-connected TV market pits it against existing devices from manufacturers including Sony, Samsung and LG as well as games console manfacturers and YouView, the broadcasters’ joint venture.
