Tel Aviv-based Cinephil and Wim Wenders’ Neue Road Movies have pre-sold the 3D series Cathedrals of Culture to ten broadcasters around the world.
These include ARTE France, Israel’s YES, Australia’s SBS and Canal Plus in Spain and Poland.
Structured as a German-Danish-French co-production by NeueRoad Movies with Copenhagen’s Final Cut for Real and Paris-based Les Films d’Ici, the series sets out to explore how buildings reflect our culture and mirror our society.
A different director will oversee each episode. Wim Wenders has chosen Berlin’s Philharmonic (aka Karajan’s Circus) as the subject of his 30-minute episode.
Denmark’s Michael Madsen will feature Halden Prison in Norway, Austria’s Michael Glawogger the National Library in St. Petersburg, and the UK director of Man on Wire, James Marsh, St. Pancras Railway Station in London.
Talks are currently underway for Brazilian film-maker Karim Ainouz to join the project, and a sixth filmmaker is due to be announced shortly.
“The directors involved in Cathedrals Of Culture all have a different artistic handwriting,” Wenders told Screen. “We see the series as a creative lab and therefore expect a significant contribution to the creative development of 3D.”
The series, which also received support from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, will be broadcast by ARTE simultaneously in 3D and in 2D in 2014.
