18.5m people are expected to buy DVDs or Blu-rays as Christmas gifts in Britain this holiday season.
Despicable Me 2, already an enormous box office hit hitting $72m for Universal UK, tops the ‘most-wanted DVD’ Christmas list in a new UK consumer survey by the British Video Association.
The BVA survey, which enlisted 2000 adults, estimated that 18.5 million people, or 37% of adults over age 18, will buy a Blu-ray or DVD as a gift this Christmas.
Shoppers said they would purchase DVDs for these people in their lives: child (43%), partner (38%), parent (18%), sibling (13%), and friend (12%).
The overall most-wanted list is:
- Despicable Me 2
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
- Breaking Bad - The Final Season
- Monsters University
- Les Misérables
- Star Trek Into Darkness
- Elf
- Man of Steel
- The Great Gatsby
- Downton Abbey - Series 4
The top three choices for the women surveyed were Despicable Me 2, Les Miserables and Monsters University. The top three for men were The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Breaking Bad — The Final Season, and Star Trek Into Darkness.
“These results show that millions of people find Blu-ray Discs and DVDs make great presents at Christmas, as video offers fantastic family entertainment and a wonderful shared experience whether you’re giving or receiving. This sentiment is echoed in the most wanted titles as the list of titles topping people’s Christmas wish-lists are films and TV programmes that will keep all the family excited, enthralled and amused over the Christmas break.” said Lavinia Carey, Director General of the BVA.
