The recently rebranded company has bulked up its war-chest with a North American rights deal for Geeta V Patel and Ravi V Patel’s true-life rom-com. Separately, Gravitas has acquired Man From Reno.
Meet The Patels chronicles the efforts of a romantically inexperienced, first generation Indian-American thrown into the dating game when he enlists the help of his parents.
Independent Television Service (ITVS) co-produced and co-financed the project with additional funding from Impact Partners, Center For Asian American Media, Tribeca Film Institute, Whitewater Films, Hartley Film Foundation and Chicken & Egg Pictures.
The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival last year where it won the audience award and did the same at Hot Docs.
Janet Eckholm and Geeta V Patel produced Meet The Patels, which will open theatrically this year.
Alchemy negotiated the deal with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. UTA also represents the film-makers.
The distributor was known until recently as Millennium Entertainment.
- Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to Dave Boyle’s thriller and Indie Spirit Award nominee Man From Reno.
The film concerns the interaction of three characters: the sheriff of a small farming town outside San Francisco, a reclusive writer with a deep secret and the eponymous drifter.
The John Cassavetes Award nominee will open in limited theatrical release in April. Digital rollout is set to follow in the summer.
