The records continue to tumble before The Twilight Saga Eclipse as Summit Entertainment reported the film grossed $68.5m on its Wednesday opening day (June 30).

Following the record $30m+ midnight results, the third entry in the supernatural franchise set a new mark for the biggest single Wednesday launch, beating $62m set by Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen in 2009.

Eclipse also registered the biggest single day opening during the summer period, beating The Dark Knight’s $67.2m set in 2008.

The biggest single day record stays for the time being with The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which took $72.7m last November.

In another high water mark, Summit confirmed that on Friday (2) Eclipse’s North American screen count will rise from 4,416 from opening day to 4,468, marking the widest launch ever.

Iron Man 2 set the previous record earlier this year on 4,390, while Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince reached 4,445 at its apogee in 2009.

Opening day results from the first wave of 41 international territories were unavailable at time of writing.
