The results are in and it’s good news for Summit Entertainment as the studio estimated The Twilight Saga: Eclipse grossed a record $30m+ from midnight shows at more than 4,000 North American theatres on Wednesday (30).

The figure sets up the third Twilight film for a monster weekend and overhauled the previous midnight record of $26.3m set by its predecessor The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Privately Summit sources are expecting a six-day weekend including the July Fourth public holiday on Monday to produce in the region of $150m.

IMAX also announced a record midnight gross as the $68m supernatural romance took more than $1m from 192 theatres. The previous best was $959,000 for Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

International opening day results were not available at time of writing. The film is set to open in 41 territories this weekend, among them Australia, Spain, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and Hong Kong.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was set to open in 4,416 theatres in North America on Wednesday – the largest ever roll-out that surpasses Iron Man 2’s 4,380 – with extra theatres scheduled for July 2.
