Strand Releasing has acquired all US rights to Catherine Breillat’s Bluebeard ahead of its US premiere on October 9 at the New York Film Festival.

Set in the 16th century, Breillat’s carnal and intellectual retelling of the classic fairy tale by Charles Perrault follows a young girl named Catherine who confronts an aristocratic wife killer.

Strand plans a spring 2010 release on the film, which premiered at Berlin last winter and stars Dominique Thomas, Lola Creton and Daphne Baiwir.

Bluebeardis a co-production between Flach Film production and CB Films and Arte France. Jean-Francois Lepetit served as producer.

Strand co-president Jon Gerrans negotiated the deal with Yoann Ubermulhin of Pyramide International.

“Strand has had a very long standing relationship with Pyramide acquiring great auteur-driven product and we’re thrilled that we will be handling Breillat’s unique take on a famous tale,” co-president Marcus Hu said.

Strand Releasing’s current titles include Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman, Max Farberbock’s A Woman In Berlin and the upcoming releases from Sundance, Peter And Vandy, The Missing Person and Toe To Toe.
