Vice president, acquisitions, Neon
- Graduated from New York University with a degree in dramatic writing
- Worked as a PA for James Schamus when he launched Symbolic Exchange
Colvin started out as a PA at New York-based independent producers Symbolic Exchange before joining Neon as a publicist in 2018 and finding her way into the acquisitions team.
The executive travels to the major markets with one of the circuit’s most active buyers, and negotiated Cannes acquisitions such as Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams and Mark Jenkin’s Enys Men. Boarding projects at an early stage secures features that stand out, says Colvin, making for a busy year. However, there is no replacing the in-person experience: “A lot of producers and agents still hold their prime product for a market.”
Echoing the fierce pro-theatrical advocacy of Neon founder Tom Quinn, Colvin is “very optimistic” about cinemagoing. “We’ve just had an amazing year for independent film and international film in the US,” she says. “If we can keep people exercising the moviegoing muscle, then we’re in good shape.”
In a tough landscape, Colvin keeps in mind the advice of Quinn and president of acquisitions and production Jeff Deutchman. “You have to keep your love of film, no matter what — burnout is incredibly high,” she declares. “I want to champion filmmakers and build a long career alongside them.”
