Sadie Soverall has spent the summer in Vancouver for Prime Video miniseries Every Year After. She plays female lead Percy in a romantic story spanning six years, adapted from Carley Fortune’s bestseller Every Summer After.
She auditioned for the role after the script arrived “out of the sky” when she was in New York for the transfer of Benedict Andrews’ Donmar-originated The Cherry Orchard.
“Percy is one of those characters I feel really instinctive towards, and it’s been fun to just use my instincts a ton,” she says. Soverall is confirmed in another leading role – not yet announced – this time in a feature for a feted US indie filmmaker: “All I can say is, I’m beyond excited.”
The south Londoner was spotted by an agent in a school production of Twelfth Night, and found an early role in 2019 Irish drama Rose Plays Julie. Further highlights include student Annabel in Saltburn, Channel 4’s The Gathering and Andrews’ innovative take on The Cherry Orchard, alongside Adeel Akhtar and Nina Hoss. “We had no blocking, so we could go anywhere and do anything. Watching Adeel and Nina make different decisions on a dime, it was an exercise in following impulse and doing the more interesting choice,” she says.
The 23-year-old has shot upcoming Working Title romantic comedy CC: Emily, with Spike Fearn and Angourie Rice, and is attached to two UK indie features, including I Am Monster. Giving her inspiration are actors such as Robert Pattinson, Josh O’Connor, Jessie Buckley, and Saltburn’s Carey Mulligan and Alison Oliver – “People who care so much about the work, put in 110%, and are fascinating and captivating always.”
