Veteran critic and festival programmer Howard Feinstein is stepping down from his role as head of the Panorama section at the Sarejevo Film Festival.

Feinstein has curated the section since 1999, having first journeyed to Sarajevo in 1997 as a jury member. He returned on the Bosnian shorts jury in 1998 and started Panorama, which was initially all fiction films, the following year.

In 2001, he launched a documentaries strand within Panorama with the backing of the Soros Foundation, and began the Tribute To… programme showing the work of contemporary film-makers who would then speak about their week to the local audience during a week of screenings.

Among the film-makers who have received the Sarajevo tribute are Mike Leigh, Alexander Payne, Bela Tarr, Tsai Ming-liang, Todd Haynes, Jia Zhang-ke, Bruno Dumont, Ulrich Seidl and, at this year’s festival, Lucrecia Martel.

Many world class film-makers came to Sarajevo for the programme including Susanne Bier, Darren Aronofsky, Jafar Panahi, Michael Winterbottom and Michael Moore.

Feinstein continues to work as a critic and commentator and writes reviews for Screen International.
