‘Agak Laen 2’

Indonesian indie studio Imajinari’s highly anticipated sequel Agak Laen: Mystery Of The Nursing Home has lived up to expectations, recording 6.5 million cinema admissions after 15 days on release.

It is on track to cross further box office milestones and elevate the annual Indonesian box office before the end of 2025.

Released on November 27, the sequel reunites director Muhadkly Acho with comedy actors Bene Dion, Boris Bokir, Indra Jegel and Oki Rengga. It follows four failing detectives who are given one last chance by going undercover to find a fugitive in a nursing home.

“Looking at the trajectory, it’s reasonable to assume that we are on course to beat the first Agak Laen in terms of numbers,” Imajinari’s co-founder Ernest Prakasa told Screen. “If the stars align, we may even end up as the number one box office movie of all time.”

The film now ranks the second highest grossing film of 2025 to date, beating the 4.6 million admissions recorded by horror film Pabrik Gula and only behind blockbuster animation Jumbo, which became the first local film ever to pass 10 million admissions earlier this year.

The film also opened in Malaysia on December 4 through Antenna Entertainments. Director Muhadkly, the four main actors, Ernest and fellow producer Dipa Andika were on a promotional roadshow that took them to Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Johor Bahru.

Launched in 2022, Imajinari is a relative newcomer to the Indonesian film scene with the first Agak Laen being its third production. In 2024, Agak Laen sold 9.1 million tickets at the Indonesian box office, making it the country’s third-biggest local film and biggest local comedy of all time.

As previously announced at the recent JAFF Market, the Jakarta-based company is ramping up its production. Edy Khemod’s feature directorial debut Operation Pesta Pora (Operasi Pesta Pora) is about a group of street pickpockets who band together for one grand heist at Indonesia’s biggest annual concert, Pestapora, while Pulang Kampung, directed by Bene as a Batak musical film, will be shot in the Samosir Island area. Both are set for release in 2026.

Ernest will direct Bandits Of Batavia, based on a serialised comic of the same name by Bryan Valenza, a comic artist who has worked on several Marvel titles such as Spider-Man, Wolverine and Ghost Rider. It will be produced as a live-action feature with an action-supernatural story where characters possess original Indonesian superpowers. The project is in early development.
