Zootopia 2

Disney’s Zootopia 2 will cross $1bn at the worldwide box office on Friday (December 12), having reached $986.1m through the end of December 11.

The sequel will become only the second Hollywood feature to cross the milestone in 2025 after Disney’s Disney’s Lilo & Stitch accomplished the feat in early summer, and becomes the fastest of any Hollywood animated feature or PG-rated film ever to do so.

In other records, as Zootopia 2 heads into its third weekend in cinemas, it has overtaken The Lion King (1994) on $979m to rank as the number 13 global animated release of all time for a Hollywood film; the number seven international Hollywood animated release of all time; the number one international Hollywood release of the year-to-date; and the number nine North American Hollywood release of the year-to-date.

The current running total factors in $753.4m from international markets and $232.7m from North America.

Box office highlights so far include an estimated $447m in China after the $272m all-time number one opening by a non-local animation carried the film to its current status as the second-highest Hollywood release behind Avengers: Endgame.

By the end of Thursday Zootopia 2 had earned $29.6m in France, $28.5m in South Korea, $20.9m in Mexico, $17.7m in Germany, $17.2m in Japan, $16.9m in the UK, $13.1m in Italy, $12.1m in Taiwan, $9.6m in Brazil, $9.4m in Australia, and $9.1m in Poland.

The feature will almost certainly overtake the $1.03bn final run of the 2016 original. Disney executives said the sequel’s success has “reignited interest in the franchise” and driven record viewership of Zootopia and Zootopia+ on Disney+ with more than 725m hours globally.

Jared Bush and Byron Howard co-directed the ongoing adventures of rabbit cop Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman. The cast includes Ke Huy Quan and Idris Elba.
