The UK’s Vertigo Films is producing an animated feature film, Critterz, that will use artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the production processes.
The film is adapted from the 2023 short of the same name which was developed using OpenAI. The screenplay was written by Paddington In Peru writers James Lamont and Jon Foster.
Production on Critterz is underway in what is described as a “human-led and AI-assisted” approach, primarily using AI to accelerate and streamline workflow. It is also using a financial model which allows all the artists involved in production to have a stake in the backend.
Nik Kleverov is directing the feature and producing via Native Foreign, a creative agency dedicated to AI storytelling. Kleverov has directed several shorts and was Emmy-nominated for designing the title sequence on Netflix’s Narcos.
Allan Niblo and James Richardson from Vertigo Films are also producing while OpenAI creative strategist Chad Nelson serves as a consulting producer.
“We’re at a pivotal moment in animation - where technology is once again transforming how stories are told and brought to life. Just as computer animation revolutionized filmmaking with Toy Story, AI is now opening new creative frontiers with Critterz,” said Vertigo’s Niblo and Richardson.
“If we can show the model works, this allows us to greenlight many more great movies taking bigger creative bets with the very best talent.”
They said Critterz will be designed to extend across multiple formats, including interactive and participatory experiences, and exist on digital platforms like social media and online games. The story centres on a peaceful village of the Critterz which is disrupted by an unexpected stranger.
