‘Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds’

French director Benoît Chieux’s Sirocco And The Kingdom Of The Wind is to open the Annecy International Animation Film Festival which runs from June 11-17.

The film – about two young sisters who discover a passage between this world and the extraordinary universe of The Kingdom of the Winds - is one of 11 titles selected for the festival’s official competition, where it will compete for the Crystal award.

Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry’s Kensuke’s Kingdom – which is adapted from Michael Morpurgo best selling children’s novel by Frank Cottrell-Boyce – also world premieres at Annecy. The UK-Luxembourg-France co-pro is produced by Lupus Films, Melusine Productions/Studio 352 and Le Pacte.

Jim Capobiano and Pierre-Luc Granjon’s The Inventor – a stop motion film about Leonardo da Vinci featuring the voices of Stephen Fry, Daisy Ridley and Marion Cotillard – also debuts in competition.

The competition also includes two films which played at the Berlinale this year: Liu Jian Chinese animation Art College 1994, which world premiered in competition, and Sepideh Farsi’s Panorama title La Sirène.

Elsewhere, the Contrechamp Competition, which features more innovative works, comprises 12 productions (see below for full list).

The festival also unveiled details of special screenings, sneak peaks and works in progress. They include Sony animated short The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, a first look at The Kenji Kamiyama’s Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim from Warner Bros Animation and a work-in-progress version of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Mutant Mayhem by Jeff Rowe.

Annecy said one hundred films were entered for its official selection, with 23 selected between the official competition and the Contrechamp competition.

Meanwhile the Annecy International Animation Film Market (Mifa) is expecting over 13,000 badgeholders, with 106 countries represented and almost 3,000 companies onsite.
