Kenneth Branagh and Ryan Reynolds in ‘Mayday’

Apple and Skydance Media’s buddy action movie Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh will debut on September 4, Apple executives said as they updated on straight-to-service films and series at a press day in Santa Monica on Tuesday (February 3).

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein co-wrote and co-directed the story about a Navy pilot shot down in Russia during the Cold War who strikes up an unlikely bond with a gruff former KGB agent with a fondness for American culture. The cast includes Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse.

Jonah Hill’s dark comedy Outcome starring Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer and Hill will debut on April 10. The feature centres on Reef Hawk, a beloved Hollywood star who must confront his part when he becomes the subject of an extortion plot. Martin Scorsese is among the ensemble cast on the Apple Original Film co-written by Hill and Ezra Woods, and produced by Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin and Hill for Strong Baby, with Adam Merims serving as executive producer

Way Of The Warrior Kid from Apple and Skydance Media and directed by McG debuts on November 20 and is based on Jocko Willink’s novel about a Navy SEAL who visits for the summer and helps his bullied nephew find his inner warrior. Chris Pratt, Linda Cardellini and Jude Hill star.

Matchbox: The Movie starring John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro arrives on the platform on October 9. Sam Hargrave’s action adventure inspired by the Mattel toys follows a group of friends whose lives are upended when their former leader, now an undercover CIA agent, returns to their small town and drags them into a glob-trotting adventure.

Comedy The Dink starring Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen tells of a former tennis prodigy who is torn when he discovers the delights of pickleball and will debut on July 24. Josh Greenbaum directs the feature produced by Ben Stiller and John Lesher for Red Hour Films, and Rob Paris and Mike Witherill for Rivulet Entertainment.

The cast includes Ed Harris, former tennis great Andy Roddick, includes Patton Oswalt, Chloe Fineman, Chris Parnell, and Aaron Chen, alongside Stiller. Sean Clements produces and executive producers are Rick Steele, Clements, Greenbaum, Joe Hardesty, Jonathan McCoy, and Daniel Crosser.

Tuesday’s announcements mostly concerned series, among them the limited drama Lucky starring Anya Taylor-Joy. Based on Marissa Stapley’s novel of the same name, the show centres on a con-artist who goes on the run when a heist goes wrong. Taylor-Joy also serves as executive producer and the cast includes Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Drew Starkey, Clifton Collins, Jr. and William Fichtner. The show runs July 15-August 19.

Limited series Imperfect Women, a psychological thriller starring Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington, runs March 18-April 29 and examines a crime that shatters the lives of a decades-long friendship of three women. Based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name, the show also features Kate Mara and Joel Kinnaman and is a co-production between 20th Television and Apple Studios. Moss serves as executive producer.

Psychological horror thriller series Cape Fear starring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson is based on the 1991 feature directed by Martin Scorsese and runs June 5 to July 31. The show from Universal Studio Group division UCP and Amblin Television is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and follows a married attorneys who face a reckoning when the man they put behind bars comes looking for vengeance.

Comedy drama Margo’s Got Money Troubles starring Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Nick Offerman debuts on April 15 and is produced for Apple TV by A24. David Kelly is the showrunner on the story about a debt-laden college dropout, young mother and aspiring writer who must try to find her way through life. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Greg Kinnear, Michael Angarano, Rico Nasty, and Lindsey Normington.
