Black comedy thriller One Battle After Another is nominated in best film, director, and all four acting categories: leading actor and actress for Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti respectively, supporting actor for Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn and supporting actress for Teyana Taylor.
Vampire horror Sinners has also landed in best film and director, plus leading actor for Michael B. Jordan and supporting actress for Nigerian-British star Wunmi Mosaku.
Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet leads among UK-produced films, with 11 nominations. Liza Marshall’s Hera Pictures and Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions are the UK producers. The Maggie O’Farrell book adaptation is the most nominated film from a female director in Bafta’s history. Josh Safdie’s table tennis tale Marty Supreme also has 11 nominations.
Further UK-produced films to receive multiple nominations are Kirk Jones’ I Swear and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia with five and James Griffiths’s The Ballad Of Wallis Island and Harry Lighton’s Pillion with three.
“A brilliant year”
A total of 46 films are nominated this year, up from 42 in 2025. “It’s representative of a brilliant year,” said Jane Millichip, Bafta CEO. “Four of the top 10 [most] nominated films are British: Hamnet, I Swear, Ballad of Wallis Island and Pillion.
“More broadly, it’s an amazing year for bold, uncompromising storytelling, with films like One Battle After Another, [about] the moral ambiguity of activism, Sinners [about] Black identity, and Bugonia, societal collapse.”
Bafta chair Sara Putt highlighted the success of genre films in this year’s line-up. “Genre movies can also be something very challenging, thoughtful, as well as being incredibly entertaining.”
Millichip and Putt also feel the documentary selection is particularly noteworthy.
“These are extraordinary, really powerful documentaries, three of which were directed by women [Petra Costa’s Apocalypse In the Tropics, Laura Poitras’ Cover-Up and Geeta Gandbhir’s The Perfect Neighbor], which is interesting,” said Millichip.
“We go from the Ukraine through Russia, Florida, Brazil,” added Putt. “That’s a huge range of subjects and stories that help us understand the world we live in.”
The Bafta Film Awards ceremony will take place on February 22 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, with Scottish actor, writer, producer and TV host Alan Cumming presenting for the first time.
Picturehouse’s Clare Binns will receive the outstanding British contribution to cinema award.
The final, third round of voting opens tomorrow (Jan 28) to determine the winners.
