Bleecker Street has teamed up with HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures Content Group on Musk, Alex Gibney’s upcoming documentary about the controversial billionaire, Tesla and Space X entrepreneur and former Donald Trump ally, Elon Musk.
Bleecker Street has acquired US theatrical rights and will release the film before its HBO Max debut.
Gibney continues to work on the project in light of recent developments. Musk’s tenure as head of Trump’s Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE), in which he oversaw US government spending and slashed tens of thousands of jobs, ended amid acrimony when the former friends clashed over the US president’s economic policy.
Musk is produced by Gibney, Jessie Deeter, and Erin Edeiken from Jigsaw Productions; Zhang Xin and Joey Marra from Closer Media; Nick Shumaker and Jessica Grimshaw from Anonymous Content; and Dana O’Keefe from Double Agent.
Executive producers include New Regency’s Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann; Richard Perello from Jigsaw; William Horberg from Closer Media; David Levine from Anonymous Content; as well as CEO Kent Sanderson and Miranda King for Bleecker Street.
Sanderson said: “No biographical portrait, outside of obvious political figures, has centred on an individual so at the crossroads of our society as Elon Musk. But there is also no filmmaker that I could possibly imagine bringing that story to audiences with unmatched clarity, audacity, and urgency more than Alex Gibney.”
King and Avy Eschenasy brokered the deal with Nick Shumaker of Anonymous Content on behalf of the filmmakers. HBO Documentary Films pre-bought North American streaming and TV rights.
Black Bear is handling international sales for the film and negotiated the deal with Universal Pictures Content Group.
Gibney won the Oscar for Taxi To The Dark Side and was nominated for Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room.
