Irish produciton companies BMAN Entertainment and Forty Foot Pictures in partnership with London-based sales agent Bankside Films have selected three projects to receive a share of €50,000 from their genre writer scheme.
The scheme is for emerging Ireland-based writers with first or second-time thriller, horror or sci-fi projects that BMAN said are “bold, original and eminently shootable”.
Tornado by Rioghnach Ni Ghrioghair follows the tumultuous journey of a couple as they traverse the land, leaving a trail of chaos and murder in their wake.
Skinny Dip, penned by Ben Conway and Roisin Mulligan, sees a carefree weekend at a secluded country lake turn into a waking nightmare for a group of Irish students.
In Mick Carolan’s The Night Impulse, a 25-year-old backpacker returns from Southeast Asia to his family’s farm, after being infected by an illness while travelling that ignites a nightly urge to kill.
BMAN has commissioned the three screenplays with a view to co-producing with Forty Foot and being sold by Bankside. The €50,000 shared pot will go towards the writing of their screenplay and receive ongoing development support.
”We were blown away by 280 incredible submissions and it was so much fun reading what Ireland’s talent has to offer. Between ourselves, Bankside and Forty Foot, it was extremely tough to arrive at a final group of projects but we are very excited by where we are,” said Dermot Malone, founder at BMAN.
”There are so many incredibly talented writers in Ireland and it was a very challenging process to narrow down to our three finalists, but here they are. We look forward to developing these projects further and helping them to find global audiences,” added Sophie Green, head of acquisitions and development at Bankside.
