Mubi has acquired UK-Ireland, Latin America excluding Brazil and India rights to Cannes Competition title The Secret Agent.
The company acquired Kleber Mendonca Filho’s political thriller from sales agent mk2 Films, and will announce release plans in the near future.
Neon acquired the film for North America yesterday; Vitrine Films will release in Brazil.
Set in 1977, The Secret Agent follows a technology agent on the run who arrives in Recife, Brazil, during carnival week. Violence in the city disrupts his hoped-for reunion with his son.
Wagner Moura leads the cast, alongside Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leon, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho and Hermila Guedes.
Emilie Lesclaux produced the film for Brazil’s Cinemascopio. Co-producers are Nathanaël Karmitz, Elisha Karmitz and Fionnuala Jamison for MK Productions; Olivier Barbier; Leontine Petit and Erik Glijnis for Lemming Film; and Fred Burle and Sol Bondy for One Two Films.
The film debuted in Cannes on Sunday, May 18. It scored a decent 2.8 average on Screen’s Cannes jury grid, for joint-third place in the latest ranking.
Mubi’s Cannes slate includes Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, which debuted in Competition last night; Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind with Josh O’Connor; and Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, which it bought for multiple territories including North America and UK-Ireland in a sizeable deal at the weekend.
The company has also picked up Julia Ducournau’s Alpha for Latin America and India; and worldwide rights for the 4K restoration of Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Amores Perros, with a global theatrical release planned.
