Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s satire Digger starring Tom Cruise will receive its world premiere as the Royal Film Performance in the UK on September 22.
Warner Bros, Legendary Pictures, and Film and TV Charity announced the premiere date on Tuesday, answering a question that had been on the minds of awards season observers since the feature has not been included in fall festivals like Venice, Toronto, New York, and London.
Hollywood studios have been conspicuous by their absence from Cannes, and to an extent Venice, this year as they adopt a more guarded approach to festival premieres in order to control the narrative before critics deliver their verdicts. Warner Bros’ Joker: Folie a Deux directed by Todd Phillips debuted in Venice two years ago and never recovered from poor reviews.
The Royal Film Performance screening takes place in London’s Leicester Square and marks the 73rd such screening delivered by Film and TV Charity in its 100-year history.
Warner Bros will release Digger in the UK and US on October 2. Digger marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language filmmaking after 2015’s Oscar winner The Revenant.
Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, who according to a synopsis from Warner Bros is the most powerful man in the world and embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything.
The cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Mary Parent serves as producer alongside Iñárritu and Michael Sharp.
Iñárritu, Parent, and Cruise hailed the work of Film and TV Charity, adding: “Digger was filmed, and post-production completed, in the UK, so it is especially meaningful to return there to debut the film with audiences for the first time in the country of its making. What we were able to accomplish with this film was made possible by the level of local excellence both in front of and behind the camera, and we can’t wait to share everyone’s talents with the world.”
