EXCLUSIVE: Freya Allan and Kodi Smit-McPhee are leading the cast of Nick Hamm’s twisted romantic drama Black Palace, with production underway in the UK.

New Regency is representing worldwide sales on the film, with Joe Anders, Raffey Cassidy, Iain Glen, Martin Clunes, and Juliet Stevenson also on the cast.

Written by Jon Croker, Black Palace is set in autumn 1888, as the emerging tabloid media terrify the public with lurid stories of Jack the Ripper.

A young woman is sent to Buckingham Palace at the heart of Queen Victoria’s British Empire, to spy on Victoria’s wayward grandson, who keeps disappearing at night. As she grows closer to the prince, traversing a maze of privilege and poverty, she uncovers secrets that threaten both the Crown and her own survival.

The film is produced by Marie-Christine Jaeger-Firmenich for Switzerland’s Simia Productions, Piers Tempest for the UK’s Tempo Productions, Mark Huffam, and Hamm for his new company Hamm4, which he runs with his sons Jackson, Theo, Monty and Henry. Black Palace is the first Hamm4 film to complete production.

The film is financed by Simia Productions as the first of a multi-film deal with Hamm4 and Tempo.

“The film is about the nature of power and what you choose to do with it – which is especially relevant today,” said Jaeger-Firmenich. “We are very happy to be working with the team on this film and I am thrilled with how the shoot is going.”

“We are delighted to be part of this compelling feature film,” said Samantha Cameron-Mowat, SVP, co-head of international distribution at New Regency. “Nick, Piers, Marie-Christine, Mark and the team have assembled an exceptional cast, both in front of and behind the camera. We are confident that this thrilling story of love, deceit and murder, set against the contrasting backdrops of glamorous society and the stark realities of Victorian London, will resonate with audiences worldwide.”

Department heads are cinematographer Jamie Ramsay, costume designer Joanna Eatwell, hair and make-up designer Karen Hartley, production designer Peter Francis, editor Yan Miles, and composer Steven Price.
