EXCLUSIVE: Montreal-based h264 has come on to represent international sales on Arsenal, Canadian filmmaker Pier-Philippe Chevigny’s queer social drama that is scheduled to wrap production in Luxembourg on November 6.

Chevigny and Chloé Robichaud co-wrote the film, a Canada-Luxembourg co-production between Le Foyer Films and art et essai in Quebec and Red Lion in Luxembourg. Production took place in Montreal and Luxembourg. Immina Films will distribute the film in Canada, and h264 will launch sales at AFM next week.

Inspired by true events, Arsenal takes place in Montreal in July 1990 as young photographer Jess documents an underground queer party that is raided by the police. Jess records the ensuing mayhem as it spills onto the streets, and along with her friend Diane, embarks on a mission to convince the press to publish her photographs.

Arsenal is shot in approximately 15 long takes chronicling a key moment in the history of Quebec’s queer community. The cast includes Nahéma Ricci, Marine Johnson, Gabriel Cloutier Tremblay, Thomas Antony Olajide, Dany Boudreault, and Jordan Gavaris.

“After eight years of development, I’m extremely proud of the team we’ve assembled to bring Arsenal to the screen,” said Chevigny, who added that the subject matter “remains all-too relevant today.” The project is supported by Telefilm Canada.
