The high-profile Hollywood lawyer representing Nick Reiner has removed himself from the case, just before Reiner’s scheduled arraignment hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court.
The court assigned a lawyer from the public defender’s office to represent Reiner, who was charged three weeks ago with two counts of first-degree murder for the death of his parents Rob and Michele Reiner.
After conferring with the judge before Reiner’s hearing on Wednesday (January 7), Alan Jackson, who has acted on behalf of Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, said in court that “we feel we have no choice” but to withdraw, according to reports. He offered no further explanation for the move.
Reiner’s arraignment was then rescheduled for February 23.
Responding to the latest development in the case, a spokesman gave a statement to the New York Times saying that the Reiner family “have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.”
The bodies of director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner were discovered at their home in Los Angeles on December 14.
Nick Reiner, who has spoken openly about his history of addition and co-wrote the 2015 feature Being Charlie with his father, was arrested and charged that evening.
