‘Hoppers’ holds firm in international markets
Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers has achieved a powerful hold in international markets in its second weekend of play, declining just 17% in holdover territories, and remaining as the top film (or top non-local film) virtually everywhere.
In North America, the Hoppers drop was 37%, ranking alongside recent sustained Pixar successes Inside Out 2 (-34%) and Elemental (-38%).
Takings after two weekends of play are $77.9m across 46 international markets and $86.8m in North America, which combine to deliver $164.7m worldwide.
Hoppers landed in Japan with an estimated $2.4m; topped the box office with new openings in Hong Kong and Singapore; and arrived in Vietnam as the weekend’s top non-local title. In the latter market, Hoppers delivered the fourth-highest opening for an animated film ever.
Cumulatively, UK/Ireland ($10.1m) leads the international pack on the film, ahead of Mexico ($7.6m), Germany ($7.3m) and France ($6.1m).
This coming weekend sees openings for Hoppers in China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Israel, Malaysia and Taiwan. Australia follows on March 26.
Pixar’s last film Elio stumbled with a $154.3m worldwide total, and Hoppers has already surpassed that number.
Back in June 2023, fellow original tale Elemental began with a smaller footprint of international markets (and North America), and expanded to 41 territories in total in its second session – reaching $121.1m at that stage of release. Sustained audience support took the film to a surprise $496.4m by the end of its run.
‘Reminders Of Him’ is latest Colleen Hoover hit
Universal Pictures has hit solid opening numbers with the latest film adapted from a Colleen Hoover book – Reminders Of Him. The tragedy-tinged romantic drama has begun with an estimated $18.2m in North America plus $10.0m across 56 international markets – and thus $28.2m worldwide.
The international opening numbers are on par with Paramount Pictures’ Regretting You last October, and ahead of the Hoover adaptation in North America. Regretting You went on to achieve $48.9m lifetime in North America, $41.6m for international, and $90.5m worldwide.
Germany leads international markets on Reminders Of Him with an estimated five-day $2.5m. Next is UK/Ireland with an estimated $1.5m, ahead of Australia ($1.3m) and the Netherlands ($750,000).
There are still a fair few key markets yet to open the film. France and Brazil welcome Reminders Of Him this coming week, with Spain to follow in April and South Korea in May.
The Vanessa Caswill-directed film stars Maika Monroe as a woman who has served time for the vehicular manslaughter that killed her fiancé, seeking access to the daughter she gave birth to in prison, and forming a bond with a bar owner (Tyriq Withers) who was her fiancé’s best friend.
While Reminders Of Him looks on track to surpass the lifetime total of Regretting You, the total for 2024 Hoover adaptation It Ends With Us ($351.4m) will remain beyond its grasp.
‘Scream 7’ sets new franchise record

Paramount Pictures/Spyglass’s Scream 7 added an estimated $17.8m worldwide in its third weekend of play, taking the total so far to $176.9m – and setting a record for the franchise (not adjusted for inflation).
Previously, the original Scream in 1996 led the pack for the franchise with $173.0m, just ahead of 1997’s Scream 2 ($172.4m).
UK/Ireland leads international markets for Scream 7 with $9.6m to date, but France is closing the gap and is now at $8.5m.
While Scream 7 beats the earlier franchise entries thanks to three decades of ticket price inflation, its $176.9m total so far compares to lifetime box office of $166.6m for Scream VI in 2023.
‘Hamnet’ hits $100m total
Estimated weekend takings of $2.3m for Focus Features/Universal Pictures’ Hamnet take the film through the $100m barrier – with box office now totalling $100.6m. UK/Ireland contributes $25.3m of that total, with North America delivering $24.1m.
The news is less good for Oscar winner Jessie Buckley’s other film on release – Warner Bros’ The Bride! has fallen out of the worldwide top 10 chart in only its second weekend of play. Estimated weekend takings of $3.8m take the total so far to $21.0m. Globally, the drop was 71% from the opening session.
‘Torrente, Presidente’ delivers Spanish local hit
Entering the worldwide weekend chart in eighth place with estimated takings of $8.0m from a single market (Spain) is sequel Torrente, Presidente – the action comedy directed, written and starring Santiago Segura.
The film belatedly revives a franchise that began in 1998 with Torrente: El Brazo Tonto De La Ley (Torrente: The Dumb Arm Of The Law), and was last on screens in 2014 with Torrente 5: Operación Eurovegas.
The opening for Torrente, Presidente – the sixth film in the series – is 84% above Operación Eurovegas, but that comaprison is not adjusted for inflation.
Segura is also the creator/star of the Padre No Hay Mas Que Uno (Father There Is Only One) family comedy franchise, which has so far yielded five hit films. Torrente, Presidente sees Segura’s character mount a bid to become president of Spain.
South Korean local hit The King’s Warden (aka The Man Who Lives With The King) remains formidable at the box office – in fifth place in the worldwide weekend chart, and now at $90.2m worldwide (including $2.4m in North America) after six weeks of play.
