EXCLUSIVE: Jakarta-based Falcon Pictures has acquired Indonesia rights to a dozen films fresh from playing in Competition at Cannes including Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s grand prix winner Minotaur.
The bumper crop of titles will all screen at Jakarta World Cinema (JWC), an international film festival organised by the team behind Falcon Pictures and its OTT platform KlikFilm. Titles that demonstrate that highest demand at JWC will go on to receive a wider theatrical release in the country while the entire lineup will also be made available on KlikFilm.
Falcon Pictures, Indonesia’s leading production and distribution company, struck a deal with Goodfellas for both family drama Fjord and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s father-daughter drama The Beloved.
From mk2 Films, Falcon acquired both Russian-language drama Minotaur and Lea Mysius’ home invasion thriller The Birthday Party.
Lukas Dhont’s wartime drama Coward and Valeska Grisebach’s jury prize winner The Dreamed Adventure were picked up from The Match Factory.
From Japan, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden and Hirokazu Koreeda’s Sheep In The Box were acquired from Bitters End and Gaga respectively. Falcon struck deals with Film Factory Entertainment for Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas and LA-based 193 for László Nemes’ Moulin.
Rounding out the acquisitions were Emmanuel Marre’s best screenplay winner A Man Of His Time, Asghar Farhadi’s Parallel Tales and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s The Samurai And The Prisoner (a Cannes Premiere title that played out of competition), all from Charades.
All are set to screen at the sixth edition of JWS, which is scheduled to take place from October 31-November 6 at CGV Grand Indonesia cinema.
Founded in 2022, JWC has established itself as a dedicated showcase of acclaimed arthouse films, drawing cinephiles from the capital Jakarta and beyond. Last year’s edition comprised 195 films from 66 countries, including 53 titles from Cannes, 23 from Berlin, and 12 from Venice. Cinema admissions reached 208,111 drawn from 100 in-person screenings and 95 online screenings.
“This year’s lineup reflects our commitment to bringing highly anticipated auteur cinema and bold new voices straight from the world’s prestigious festival circuits to Jakarta,” said KlikFilm director Frederica, who is also a lead producer at Falcon Pictures and executive director of JWC.
JWC will also screen a string of titles that Falcon Pictures acquired from this year’s Berlinale, including Golden Bear winner Yellow Letters by İlker Çatak, Silver Bear winner Salvation by Emin Alper and further competition titles The Loneliest Man In Town by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, and We Are All Strangers by Anthony Chen.
Also from Berlin are Generation Kplus winner Gugu’s World by Allan Deberton, Shahrbanoo Sadat’s No Good Men and Assaf Machnes’ Where To?.
In previous years, the most popular titles from JWC would subsequently have a theatrical release such as Palme d’Or winners Titane, Triangle Of Sadness, Anatomy Of A Fall and It Was Just An Accident.
“As JWC enters its 2026 edition, our mission remains steadfast: to bridge global cinematic excellence with Indonesia’s rapidly growing and passionate film community,” Frederica added.
