Visual Media Studio (VMS) is debuting at the second edition of Indonesia’s JAFF with romantic drama The Last Flight and Hope, an Indonesian remake of a Korean feature film.
The Last Flight stars real-life celebrity couple Jerome Kurnia and Nadya Arina as a pilot and a flight attendant who become embroiled in a love scandal, touching on a subject matter rarely seen in Indonesian cinema. It is scheduled to open in local cinemas on January 15.
Hope is adapted from the 2013 Korean film of the same name directed by Lee Joon-ik and produced by Lotte Entertainment. Based on a true story, the drama follows an eight-year-old girl and her family who struggle to rebuild her life following a violent assault. Filming is due to start in January for release in 2026.
Both The Last Flight and Hope are directed by Benni Setiawan whose recent credits include Call Me Dad, also a heartfelt drama adapted from Korean film Pawn.
Both films are produced by VMS CEO Tony Ramesh who attended the inaugural JAFF Market as a visitor last year and decided to take a market stand this edition to promote its growing slate. His Jakarta-based company is a rising industry player, having released its first production The Corpse Washer (Pemandi Jenazah) only last year. The horror film hit the jackpot when it secured 1.65 millioncinema admissions in Indonesia and also proved a box office success in Malaysia.
It was followed by religious drama Assalamualaikum Baitullah, which was partially shot on location in Mecca, and horror film Maryam, both released last year.
VMS will also serve as co-investor and co-producer to support fellow filmmakers. One recent collaboration is assault drama Ozora, which is set to open on December 4.
