‘Zootopia 2’

Disney’s Zootropolis 2 is leading the charge at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, out at 618 sites.

The sequel to the 2016 film is directed by Jared Bush and Bryon Howard, co-writers and co-directors on the first film alongside Rich Moore, and picks up as the rabbit and fox unlikely cop duo tackle a serpent crime that in turn unfurls a web of lies and conspiracies. Zootropolis – known as Zootopia outside of Europe – grossed £24m in UK-Ireland and $1.24bn (£1bn) worldwide.

Voice cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba and Shakira.

Picturehouse and Warner Bros are partnering on Harry Lighton’s feature debut Pillion at 164 sites. The Cannes Un Certain Regard screenplay prize winner stars Alexander Skarsgard as a mysterious biker who forms a BDSM relationship with a timid stranger, played by Harry Melling.

Sony has Richard Linklater’s Berlinale premiere Blue Moon, profiling the final days of US songwriter Lorenz Hart and starring Ethan Hawke, Andrew Scott and Margaret Qualley, at 141 locations.

Black Bear is releasing David Michôd’s Toronto premiere Christy, headlined by Sydney Sweeney. The boxing biopic sees Sweeney play Christy Martin, the first major US female boxing star.

Netflix has an awards-qualifying release of Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives OutMystery.

Signature Entertainment’s Australian science fiction Primitive War, directed by Luke Sparke, is out at 112 locations. 

Emblem Pictures is releasing Desperate Journey, about a Nazi-fleeing Austrian Jewish boy in the 1930s. 

Event cinema 

In a busy weekend for event cinema, National Theatre Live has The Fifth Step starring Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman at 461 venues from Friday-Sunday, with an additional 297 sites yesterday (Thursday, November 27).

Cinema Live’s Westlife - Royal Albert Hall will be playing at 440 UK-Ireland sites across the weekend.

Encore screenings of Trafalgar Releasing’s Cinderella 2024 – Royal Opera House London 2025 will take place at 245 locations across the weekend, having opened on Tuesday (November 25). Trafalgar also has K-pop concert Seventeen World Tour [New] In Japan: Live Viewing and National Amusements has a collection of 1970s TV adventures in Paddington Bear: Winter Warmers out at 16 sites. 

There are three Indian romances newly released: Bakrania Media’s Tere Ishk Mein, from director Aanand L. Rai, is out at 73 sites. Vibhu Puri’s Gustaakh Ishq, is being released at 33 sites, while Dreamz Entertainment has Kushal Naik’s Misri.

On the documentary front, Tull Stories has Kim Hopkins’ documentary Still Pushing Pineapples, about novelty 1980s pop act Black Lace, known for the infectious song Agadoo, at four sites. Further docs out this weekend are Kaleidoscope’s Rhino, a film about Kenya’s rhino-poaching issue, narrated by Tom Hardy; Loop’s Sundance doc Zodiac Killer Project; and the Institute of Contemporary Arts hasF iume o morte!, a doc about early-20th-century Italian warrior-poet Gabriele D’Annunzio.
