The 2nd JAFF Market wrapped on Monday (December 1) after three days of intense activities in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, reinforcing the event as an emerging hub for business and creative exchange between Indonesian and international industry partners.

“Everyone was excited about coming to Jogja,” said JAFF market director Linda Gozali. “People spent time and budget to come here to formalise business, making JAFF Market as a new hub.”

This year, the market drew 122 companies and hosted 144 market stands at Jogja Expo Center (JEC), which ran from November 29-December 1 alongside the 20th Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF).

After a notable launch last year, new exhibitors joined the second edition of the market, including Rapi Films, Scovi Films, Visual Media Studio, Uwais Pictures, Caravan Studios, Studio Antelope, Sinemaku Pictures and SL23 from Indonesia. There was also a new dedicated zone titled Indonesia Post Production Collective to promote the country’s capabilities in VFX, animation, music, sound mixing and colour grading.

From outside Indonesia, first-time exhibitors included the Korean Film Council, Korean Film Commissions & Industry Network, and Japan’s Toei Company.

Several media launches were held on-site at the main stage of the expo centre, such as Visinema Pictures’ epic Queen Of Malacca, Magma Entertainment’s The Blind Warrior From The Phantom Cave: Angel Eyes to be adapted from an iconic comic book series, Kamila Andini’s latest drama Four Seasons In Java, and Yosep Anggi Noen’s political drama The Sea Speaks His Name, offering a first look at their upcoming projects.

Many more launches and talks took place at the exhibitors’ own booths, creating a vibrant atmosphere across the trade floor.

Cross-border collaborative efforts were apparent, including the Nusantara Wave launch between Indonesia and Malaysia, and Triple Green CineCapital, a new film investment fund between Singapore’s Leonard Lai and Vietnam’s Hang Trinh.

Some 76 titles were available as market screenings, comprising the latest titles from exhibitors and selected festival titles from JAFF.

“Before going global to capture and embrace the international markets, we start with Southeast Asia,” said Linda, who is also a producer and co-founder at Magma Entertainment. “Malaysia is our first collaborator and we expect to extend to Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. There’s a lot that we can do.”
