Bosnian directors Jasmila Žbanić and Danis Tanović and Italian filmmaker Maura Delpero have joined the speaker lineup for Croatia’s Slano Film Days, taking place from June 16-20.
The event, overseen by the Sarajevo Film Festival, brings together emerging filmmakers from the Adriatic region with leading film professionals from across the world for five days of talks, screenings and networking.
Golden Bear-winning and Oscar-nominated Žbanić will give a film talk revealing new details about her latest film, Quo Vadis, Aida? – The Missing Part, which recently completed shooting. It is being sold by Indie Sales.
The film, set shortly after the massacre at Srebrenica, stars Irish actor Liam Cunningham, who will also be attending Slano Film Days. Cunningham, whose other credits include Steve McQueen’s Hunger and Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes The Barley, is best known for his role in HBO’s Game Of Thrones, which did extensive shooting in Croatia.
Hungarian director Lili Horvát will be in Slano to share insights about her first English-language film, My Notes On Mars, starring Rupert Friend and Mackenzie Davis, and sold by Paradise City Sales and UTA Independent Film Group.
As part of the Slano programme, one of Horvát’s earlier features, Preparations To Be Together For An Unknown Period of Time, will be screening with its lead actress Natasha Stork in attendance.
Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco, whose credits include Dreams and Memory, will be discussing his approach to storytelling and direction as part of the Career Talks Programme.
Top casting directors, talent agents, producers and sales agents are also due in town. Emilie Georges, producer of Call Me By Your Name and founder of Memento Films International, will be in Slano, as will UK producer Mike Goodridge, founder of Good Chaos. Philippe Bober, founder of Coproduction Office, Erik Hemmendorff, producer and co-founder of Plattform Produktion, and Olivier Barbier, co-founder of Lucky Number, are also due to attend.
UK casting director Kate Rhodes James, known for her work on Ridley Scott films including Gladiator 2 and Napoleon, Italian casting director Francesco Vedovati, whose credits include The White Lotus and The Two Popes, and renowned Sarajevo-based casting director Timka Grin are among those giving career talks.
As has been previously announced, Swedish double Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund, Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski, whose latest feature Fatherland has just won the best director prize in Cannes, actor-director Maggie Gyllenhaal, and actors Joanna Kulig and Peter Sarsgaard will also be attending.
