Netflix has commissioned a sci-fi drama that will see The Matrix creators Andy and Lana Wachowski team with Babylon5 creator Joe Michael Straczynski.

Sense8 is the first move into TV from the Wachowski’s, who have also directed movies including V for Vendetta and Cloud Atlas.

The 10 x 60-minute series is being produced by Georgeville Television, the nascent production company set up by Harry Potter producer Marc Rosen, and Straczynski’s Studio JMS.

The series will launch in 2014 and will follow Hemlock Grove, Arrested Development, Orange Is The New Black and Narcos.

“Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

“Their incredible creations are favourites of Netflix members globally and we can’t wait to bring Sense8 to life.”

The Wachowskis added: “We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.

“Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

This is the latest project for Georgeville Television, which is owned by Indian conglomerate Reliance Entertainment and backed by Motion Picture Capital’s Leon Clarance, following NBC’s Crossbones, which stars John Malcovich, as well as a new series from The X-Files’ Chris Carter and a reboot of classic sci-fi series Blake’s 7.
