Screen has confirmed Netflix will skip a theatrical release for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in France next year and send Greta Gerwig’s fantasy adventure straight to the platform on April 2, 2027.

The move is consistent with how Netflix distributes its features in France, where as reported earlier on Monday it was the first streamer to sign up to France’s media chronology agreement.

The streamer has a 17-month window between a film’s theatrical release and its debut on the platform – two months longer than the prior arrangement since it did not recommit to the agreement by the end of last year.

Sony Pictures holds all international theatrical distribution rights excluding France and North America in the territories where Netflix operates (not China or Russia), and will distribute Narnia on February 12, 2027.

Imax previews of Gerwig’s anticipated tentpole will begin in North America on February 10, 2027. Netflix will open the feature in wide theatrical release starting on February 12, 2027, in major chains, regional, and independent venues.

Netflix has been lobbying to have its French distribution window reduced to 12 months, arguing the rules are outdated and unfair since it invests more overall in local film and television than other groups.
