Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Ryan Lopez are leading the voice cast of Netflix’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits; with original songs from Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Paramore’s Hayley Williams.
Byrne has written and produced three original songs for the film, performed by the cast: ‘We’re Not Like Ev’ryone Else’, ‘Lullaby’ and ‘The Problem Is You’. The end credits will feature the song ‘Open the Door’, a collaboration between Byrne and Williams.
Ramakrishnan and Lopez will voice lead characters Beesha and Bubsy.
Joining Ramakrishnan and Lopez on the voice cast are Timothy Simons, Nicole Byer, Jason Mantzoukas, Alan Tudyk, Mark Proksch, Rebecca Wisocky and Charlie Berens.
Previously announced voice cast include Margo Martindale, Johnny Vegas, Emilia Clarke and Natalie Portman.
The Twits will launch on Netflix on Friday, October 17. It is directed by Phil Johnston and written by Johnston and Meg Favreau, adapted from Dahl’s 1980 children’s novel. Producers are Johnston, Maggie Malone and Daisy May West; with animation by The Boss Baby and The Bad Guys animators Jellyfish Pictures.
The story follows Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world; and the two brave children who confront them to save the city.
“I reached out to Hayley Williams to collaborate on the end credits song and we both agreed that it should serve to remind us that there is heart and connection in the story after all the unpleasantness depicted by Mr. and Mrs. Twit,” said Byrne.
“It feels like a cautionary tale - and also a really lovely depiction of chosen family and community, which is one of my favourite topics,” said Williams.
“Throughout the process, my collaboration with David has been incredibly fun and surprisingly easy, probably because I’ve been stealing from him for so long,” said Johnston.
The Twits is Netflix’s latest Roald Dahl adaptation, after 2022’s Matilda the Musical, which it distributed internationally; and Wes Anderson’s four-film anthology The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More.
