Michael B Jordan as the Smokestack Twins in ‘Sinners’

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners leads the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards, setting a new Oscars record with 16 nominations.

The horror-action film starring Michael B. Jordan beat the previous record of 14 shared by All About Eve (1940), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another also had a strong showing with 13 nominations.

Further features to score multiple nods included Marty Supreme, Frankenstein and Sentimental Value with nine, and Hamnet with eight.

Films with four nominations apiece included Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent and Train Dreams.

Marking the first new Oscar category in 25 years, nominees were revealed for achievement in casting. They included Nina Gold for Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme, Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another, Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent and Francine Maisler for Sinners.

Titles vying for best picture include Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners and Train Dreams.

The nominees were announced by actors Danielle Brooks, who was previously Oscar-nominated for The Color Purple, and Lewis Pullman.

Ahead of the announcement, AMPAS president Lynette Howell Taylor appeared to comment on the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in cinema. “We live in a time of limitless technology that enables us to push the boundaries of our cinematic experience and our profound belief is that the heartbeat of film is and will always remain unmistakably human,” she said.

The 2026 Oscars will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Conan O’Brien returns to host the ceremony.
