EXCLUSIVE: Paradise City Sales has sold Konstantina Kotzamani’s “mermaid” drama Titanic Ocean to key territories across Europe and Asia.
The film, which bowed in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and received its Asia premiere at Busan this week, has been acquired for France (Wayna Pitch), Norway (Another World Entertainment), Bulgaria (Beta Film), Russia (Vereteno Film Company), the former Yugoslavia (Five Stars), Poland (Mayfly), and the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Cinemart).
Asian sales include Hong Kong (First Distributors), Taiwan (Sky Digi Entertainment), Singapore (Shaw Organisation) and Indonesia (PT Falcon). HBO CEE has taken pay-TV and SVOD rights for Central and Eastern Europe, with Latin America going to Cine Canibal.
The sales add to previously confirmed distribution deals in Germany (GrandFilm), Japan (Happinet Phantom Studios) and Romania (Tribe Films).
The coming-of-age story is set at a Japanese boarding school where teenage girls train to work as professional mermaids. It centres on 17-year-old Akame, who learns to hold her breath, perform underwater and swim alongside sharks, while navigating first love and learning to find her siren voice.
It stars a rising Japanese cast including Arisa Sasaki, Melina Mardini, Haruna Matsui, Hanase Kotone, Aki Kigoshi, Hanna Muro and Riku Nakamura.
The debut of Greek filmmaker Kotzamani is produced by Greece’s Homemade Films, in co-production with Germany’s Wunderlust, Romania’s deFilm, France’s Manny Films, Spain’s Frida Films, and Japan’s Happinet Phantom Studios and Mam Film.
Since its Cannes premiere, the film has screened at Munich, Sarajevo and Helsinki film festivals. Kotzamani also won best director at Transilvania.
This month, Titanic Ocean plays in the Flash Forward section of Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and will also screen in competition at Sitges Film Festival.
