EXCLUSIVE: Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas has been picked up by Curzon for UK-Ireland release, as principal photography gets underway in Spain.
The deal was negotiated by Bárbara Peiró at El Deseo and Curzon Film managing director Louisa Dent.
The film follows an advertising director whose mother dies during a long weekend in December. She throws herself into her work, until a panic attack forces her to take a break and a trip to Lanzarote.
Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit and Quim Gutiérrez star.
The Spanish-language feature is produced by Almodóvar and his brother Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo with the collaboration of Movistar Plus+ and is shooting between Madrid and Lanzarote.
“It has been a dream for all of us at Curzon and myself in particular to work with Pedro Almodóvar and the team at El Deseo,” said Dent. “To do so on this funny, introspective, and deeply moving film only adds to our euphoria. We wish Pedro and his team well with the shoot and look forward to bringing the film to audiences in the UK and Eire next year.”
Warner Bros will release the film theatrically in Spain.
