‘Ali G in da House’

Sacha Baron Cohen is making his feature directorial debut on Ali G: Who Iz I?, for Amazon MGM Studios.

The company confirmed it is releasing the film theatrically in the US on October 23. It declined to reveal details of the international release.

Baron Cohen has been spotted filming at events such as the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London.

The Ali G character, a supposedly streetwise West London poseur, announced the project in an Instagram post: “Dey has finally made a documentary about me. And it ain’t like dat crap one about da penguins. Dis one haz got at least twice as much animal sex. Ali G: Who Iz I? Cominatcha on 10.23 wotever dat means.”

Baron Cohen introduced Ali G on UK television in the late 1990s and built a series around the character in the early 2000s for Channel 4.

Mark Mylod’s feature Ali G In Da House followed in 2002, grossing $23.3m worldwide.

Other features built around Baron Cohen characters are Borat, which took $262m worldwide in 2006; Bruno, which managed $188.8m in 2009; and The Dictator, which grossed $179.4m in 2012.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm followed in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown, going straight onto Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video.
