His work on the first two Ip Man films both won best action choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards and his performance in Ip Man 2 won the best supporting actor prize at the 5th AFAs in 2011.

Hung said of the honorary award: “I’m so happy and surprised that I can still win awards these days, especially an award that affirms my entire performing career.”

Next week’s ceremony will take place at Hong Kong Palace Museum on March 12, the night before the anticipated in-person return of Hong Kong Filmart.

It also marks a comeback for the AFAs, which did not take place in 2022. The ceremony was held in Busan, South Korea, in 2021 after taking place online the previous year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last time the AFAs were held in Hong Kong was 2019.

The awards aim to highlight the best films from Asia are a joint initiative of Hong Kong, Busan and Tokyo film festivals with the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA).
