‘Mangrove’

Small Axe leads the nominations for this year’s Bafta Television and Bafta Craft awards, which take place on June 6 and May 24, respectively.

The BBC mini-series, created and directed by Steve McQueen, is up for 15 awards (six television and three craft), including best mini-series, John Boyega and Shaun Parkes for leading actor, Letitia Wright for leading actress, and Malachi Kirby and Michael Ward for supporting actor.

Small Axe was produced by Turbine Studios and Lammas Park alongside the BBC and Amazon Studios. Two episodes – Mangrove and Lovers Rock – were picked for the Cannes Official Selection in 2020.

The Crown has the next highest number of nominations with 10 (four television, six craft), including drama series, leading actor for John O’Connor, supporting actor for Tobias Menzies and supporting actress for Helena Bonham Carter.

Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You follows with eight nominations (four craft, four television), with Normal People next up with seven (three television, four craft).

The BBC leads the way with 104 nominations (46 craft and 58 TV), followed by Channel 4 with 27 (20 TV, 7 craft), Netflix on 25 (12 TV, 13 craft), Sky on 24 (14 TV, 10 craft) and ITV on 13 (8 TV, 5 craft).

The main TV awards will be broadcast on BBC One on June 6, with Richard Ayoade returning as host. The craft awards will be streamed on Baftas social channels on May 24 and be hosted by actor, writer and director Gbemisola Ikumelo.

Both ceremonies will be socially-distanced studio events with awards presenters either joining the hosts in the studio or via video call.
