EXCLUSIVE: Journeyman Pictures has acquired Anrew H Brown and Bea Wangondu’s Kikuyu Land in an all-rights global deal.
UK-based sales and distribution firm Journeyman will handle distribution in all markets for the film, and is planning theatrical releases in territories including the US, UK-Ireland, Australia-New Zealand, and key European markets.
Journeyman will also handle TV sales and a global digital release, as well as an impact campaign for the film.
Kikuyu Land had a world premiere in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance in January, before playing in the F:act competition at CPH:DOX in March.
It has appeared in six further US festivals, had a Latin American premiere at Guadalajara International Film Festival, and was selected this week for its UK premiere at Sheffield DocFest in June.
Kikuyu Land is set in the tea highlands of Kenya, where one man’s claim to his family’s stolen land sets him on a path against a multinational corporation.
Journeyman acquired the film from US producers Trifilm Studios, having previously collaborated on Brown and Trifilm’s 2023 documentary Between The Rains. Producers on the film are Moses Bwayo, Mike Morrisoe for Trifilm, Joseph Njenga, Brown and Wangondu.
“Bea Wangondu’s tenacious journalism in the face of a highly personal and often dangerous subject, coupled with Andrew H Brown’s stunning cinematography and editing, makes for a truly special documentary,” said Emma Simpson, Journeyman Pictures director.
