EXCLUSIVE: Georgi M Unkovski’s DJ Ahmet, which won two prizes in Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic competition, has been picked up for the UK and Ireland by Conic.
Macedonian filmmaker Unkovski’s debut feature tells the story of a 15-year-old boy from a remote Yuruk village in North Macedonia who finds solace in music as he struggles with his father’s expectations, a conservative community and his first romantic heartbreak.
Conic will release the film in early 2026, having picked up the rights from sales agent Films Boutique.
DJ Ahmet won the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award and the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at Sundance.
The film has previously sold to Australia and New Zealand (Madman Entertainment), Benelux (September Film Distribution) and Canada (Films We Like).
It is produced by North Macedonia’s Cinema Futura. Co-producers are Alter Vision and Analog Vision (Czech Republic), Backroom Production and Film House Bas Celik (Serbia), 365 Films (Croatia) and Sektor Film (North Macedonia). Producers are Ivan Unkovski and Ivana Shekutkoska.
