EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s True Colours has boarded international sales for On Our Own (De Capul Nostru), the latest feature film by Romanian filmmaker Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, which will world premiere next month in the Forum section of the Berlinale.
A Romanian-Italian co-production, the film follows Flavia, a sharp and self-reliant fourteen-year-old living alone after her parents leave for Italy. When she learns they are divorcing, her fragile balance begins to crumble. She finds comfort in her friendships and forms a surrogate family, but when her friends leave, Flavia confronts the limits of her longing and the emotional void left by absent parents
Inspired by Romania’s 150,000 children with parents abroad, On Our Own explores adolescence, resilience, and the tension between yearning for connection and fearing its loss.
It is produced by Tudor Giurgiu and Bogdan Crăciun for Libra Films in co-production with Simone Catania and Francesca Portalupi of Indyca, with the support of Eurimages, Media, CNC, TVR, MIC and Regione Emilia-Romagna.
Jurgiu’s debut feature film The Japanese Dog (2013) premiered at San Sebastián International Film Festival and won the first feature award at Warsaw Film Festival.
Fabio Tucci, head of acquisitions at True Colours, said: “On Our Own is a visually poetic and powerful film that explores the impact of migration from the unusual perspective of those who stay behind, often children and young people. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Libra on Tudor Jurgiu’s new film, further enriching our slate with singular and distinctive works from European auteurs.”
