‘Hungry’

EXCLUSIVE: Susanne Brandstaetter’s “sci-fi” documentary Hungry, making its world premiere in the Harbour strand of International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), has been boarded for sales by the UK’s Impronta Films.

The documentary unfolds as if it were a science fiction film, in which a mysterious being discovers humanity is extinct, and sets out into the world to unravel what happened. While searching for clues, the being creates the film using interviews made with scientists before the extinction, exploring subjects including the destruction of food security, the deterioration of labour markets, the hijacking of democratic governments and the global decline of democracy.

Hungry was produced with the support of the Austrian Film Institute & ÖFI+, Film Fund Vienna, ORF Film/TV Agreement, and Lower Austria Culture. It participated in ProPro, an international initiative to strengthen women producers, as well as in Vienna’s Market Ready, International Screen Institute.

“Setting the film in the near future in a world devoid of humans may seem at first downbeat and pessimistic, but actually the opposite is true,” said Austrian-US filmmaker Brandstaetter. ”Because the film has a positive message. And though my films often show the darker sides of humanity, at heart I’m an optimist. I’m convinced that films, and that this film in particular, can make an impact and inspire people.”

London-based documentary specialist Impronta Films is headed by Spain-born Ana Fernández Saiz. Its EFM slate includes Berlin 2025 premiere Canone Effimero and Sheffield Doc Fest 2025 world premiere Blue Has No Borders.
